Party at The Natural History Museum: What to Expect at One Step Beyond
If you’re looking for a unique place to party in New York, look no further. Kick off your weekend with drinks and an explosive dance party at the Natural History Museum. Once a month the History Museum throws one hell of a party as live bands and DJS spin along with dynamic visuals in the Rose Center for Earth and Space.
Guests enter at the Weston Pavillion located at 79th and Columbus. Ticket pickup is easy enough at automated kiosks and lines weren’t terribly long. However, if you’re hoping to check a coat, pick up a glass of wine first, you’ll be there for at least 25 minutes. Wine and beer are available for $8.50 and $7.50 respectively. Juices and waters are also available, but I didn’t note what the prices were. You should come here and have a beer at the very least.
Visitors are free to enjoy cocktails and peruse the exhibits located in the Rose Center for Earth and Space, which is nice. Lots of cute, young couples enjoying a romantic date. I really wished though that I could have made it over to the dinosaurs! Rawr!
The scene is a mix of young electronic music hipsters, random tourists and older people looking for something cool to do. I think though that each member of the eclectic crowd had a good time.
Once the acts begin performing, the floor gets pretty crowded if you want to be close to the performers. However, if you’re not a 22 year-old groupie, and you don’t need to be up close and personal, there is plenty of room to enjoy the show on the outskirts without being bothered by the younger crowd. We ended up snagging “seats” right behind the band, which turned out to be the best seats in the house because we were the closest people to the band.
Be warned that the music is LOUD. I mean, really loud. Like I felt my organs vibrating inside of me no matter where you stood. If you don’t mind this though, it’s pretty cool. Helps you feel the music, literally, and get into the young, hipster craziness.
We saw Javelin, which I had never heard of before. They performed their music live and I was blown away. They’re a crazy electronic, punk band from Brooklyn and watching them was really incredible. I highly recommend seeing them live if you have the chance. Foster the People’s DJ set was cool too. They had this identical twin, in sync, performance going on. I thoroughly enjoyed it despite my yearning for them to perform “Pumped Up Kicks.”
You must be 21 or older to attend this event. Bring your I.D. and don’t forget your credit card you used to purchase the tickets, it makes pickup much quicker.
